The Most Overlooked Method For Growing Your Business Beyond 6-Figures

Growing an online business does require some work — you know, you’ve been there. First there was the learning curve of… wtf is an online business? I need an email list? Social media? Blog? What else?! And then there was actually getting clients or selling your products… how do I send contracts, how do I communicate with them, you remember all that, right?

And then, when it finally seems like that stuff is figured out and you’re in a good place… you get that tingling for more. You know there’s something else, but you aren’t sure what. You’ve maybe gotten to 60...80… or even 100k a year but it’s HARD. It isn’t the freedom and flexibility you wanted, it’s long hours and late nights and it, well, sucks.

You want to grow beyond 6-figures, but how? You’re tapped out on hours you can work, maxed out on raising your prices, and don’t see any possibilities for growth.

I’m going to let you in on a secret.

Growing your business beyond 6-figures is all about your mindset.

And that’s just all there is to it, honestly.

See, you get to a level — and this level differs for everyone — of things you can accomplish with your current beliefs. For most of us, I’ve noticed, it caps at around 6-figures for one reason or another. We can hustle to that mark, we can shove down our fears and worries and beliefs and straight up grind it out to 100k a year. But beyond that, there’s just NOT an ability to keep that hustle going.

And then, when we think BEYOND that, it becomes scary. We are filled with fear, doubts, and stories that do not serve us. We can’t depend on sheer willpower anymore, so something has got to change here. And that is… you! Your mindset, how you view the world, what you believe is possible, and more.

But most people will ignore that. They’ll opt for spending tons of money on strategists, Facebook Ads, business programs, and more. Most people choose to do 1000x the work EXTERNALLY to get results than dive into the INTERNAL work that will yield results quicker, better, and more effortlessly. They’ll do that because executing a strategy sounds easier than figuring out why you’re scared of success or think that money always disappears, or whatever other stories are running rampant for you right now.

So, the question to ask yourself is: do I want to continue to hustle to try and make it beyond 6-figures? Or do I want to align into the next-level version of myself, and LET more things flow to me effortlessly?

That choice is yours! But it IS a choice. And if you’re not happy with what you have around you right now, if you’re not happy with the results in your life and business right now…

Simply make another choice.

Developing a Successful Mindset for Your Business

In my experience, you can hustle your way to about 60-80k/year in your business. That’s a great number! But for many entrepreneurs, you hit that mark, and you feel like… well, now what? It’s not enough to retire early or take off days at a time. It’s not enough to never worry about your bills again. It’s not… enough, but you’re working A LOT, so what do you do?

The reason that we get stuck around that mark is that it tends to be the average of the highest we think we can charge hourly with the number of hours we can work without totally becoming a hermit and never seeing our loved ones again. Consciously we want MORE, but unconsciously we don’t want to alienate ourselves even more behind the computer screen and we don’t feel we are “worth” charging more money.

It’s a pickle, huh!?

So, here’s where the transition happens — you have to move away from focusing on hustling and start to do the inner work, the mindset work, to break past that barrier. Mindset is the thing that gets you from where you are right now to where you want to be in the future. Not hustling more, not finding the perfect strategy, none of those things you think you “have to figure out”... just YOU.

Now, I’m going to assume you’ve heard this idea before. I’m going to assume you’ve heard people talk about mindset and you are… curious but cautious. It feels… weird.

Here’s why: it feels in opposition to what we’ve been taught our entire lives. The education system teaches: there are answers out there, find them. You are doing it the right way or the wrong way. Do it the right way, you succeed; do it the wrong way, you fail. That’s ingrained in our minds (at least in America) for nearly our entire lives.

Then we get into business, we decide to be an entrepreneur, and suddenly… we exhaust the old strategies of late nights, cramming, hustling, doing “it right”, etc. We try those and it doesn’t seem to be working like we think it should. That’s because those old ways of operating aren’t going to serve you in this new world.

Instead of focusing on “getting it right”, we have to focus on being okay with learning and growing. Instead of “getting the A” we have to focus on taking action, period. Instead of focusing on “I’ll stay up late and cram” we have to focus on making space for creative thought and challenging our beliefs.

It sounds crazy and hard and weird and all the objections you have because it IS different than what you’ve done before. It is different than, perhaps, how you’ve found success before. There’s no “teacher” or “professor” or anyone to tell you YES or NO. It’s just you.

And while that might feel scary right now, you could just as easily decide that it feels exciting. Because now you’re in the driver’s seat. Now you’re in control. Now you’re the one in charge. And you get to make the rules. You get to decide what is “right” or “wrong” — or that right and wrong just don’t exist. It’s all up to you.

When you do that you are taking ownership over your life, over your outcomes, over your success. We tend to default to a victim type mentality of life “happening to us” when in reality, the secret to success is deciding that we are in control and everything is happening for us.

So, how do you develop a successful mindset for business?

First: decide that you are no longer operating from a place of “effect” or “victim mentality”. Decide that you are in control and taking radical responsibility for your life. You can do this by starting to ask: “how am I at cause for this?” in any and all situations.

Second: decide that you cannot fail. There is no right or wrong, there is just action and inaction. The only failure is inaction (stopping before you reach your goal, or never starting). If you keep moving, you’re not failing. And if you do hit a bump, know that it’s not a failure: you win or you learn, always.

How does that feel? Can you start to do those two simple steps?

The Best Thing To Focus On To Grow Your Business

Are you feeling stuck in your business? Perhaps like you are working day in and day out and the needle just… isn’t moving? Maybe you feel like things are doing okay actually, but you have no idea what you want to do next, to keep on growing?

If any of those ideas feel true to you, I’d be curious to ask you this: What are you focusing on? What are your predominant thoughts about business throughout your workday?

What I find often is that this idea of feeling ‘stuck’ or ‘lost’ about what to do in your business stems from the THOUGHT that you’re stuck. See, thoughts precede feelings. So you spend enough time thinking,  “I’m stuck” and then you begin to feel stuck. As you begin to feel stuck, then the idea of action feels further and further away…

But you weren’t ever actually stuck. You just had a thought that you decided to keep thinking about being stuck — which led to you feeling stuck, acting stuck, resulting in stuck. Does that make sense?

👆🏻 Pin This Post To Pinterest 👆🏻

The real place to start here would be to question why you were ever thinking that you felt stuck in the first place? What’s triggering that thought? With my coaching clients, I tend to notice that these thoughts derive from focusing on what other people are doing too much.

For example, you might see so-and-so launching another program, or having another $10k month, and start to feel inadequate and like you aren’t doing enough. That leads to this thought of “I’m not enough, I’m just here, and I’ve been here, and I’ll keep on being here, and this is just it. I’m stuck.”

Does that feel like a pattern you’ve lived out before?

Sometimes it might misleadingly feel motivating to be in that place. You might feel like you get a “fire under your *ss” and want to start making changes and doing the dang thing. However, you’re finding that faux-motivation from a place of “I’m not doing enough”, which ultimately won’t serve you. The thought, “I’m not doing enough, I need to do more” will only lead to results of… not doing enough and needing to do more. Our thoughts create our reality, so while it might sound as pumped-up as a Jock Jams CD, it’s setting you up for disappointment.

Rather than focusing your energy on…

  • I’m stuck.

  • I need to do more.

  • I’m not doing enough.

The goal should be to shift to:

  • I’m capable.

  • I’m worthy.

  • I can do this.

Because those types of thoughts will get you lasting results, epic results, rather than surges of energy met with disappointment and burnout.

Do you see the difference there? The best thing to focus on to grow your business is the idea that you are so worthy and capable of creating and growing a successful business. NOT that you’re not doing enough, NOT that you need to try harder, NOT that you gotta hustle it out for just this week…

I would challenge you to make your priority for the next week to be on how worthy and capable you are and watch what unfolds. A simple shift from “I’m stuck” or “I need to do more” to “I can do this” will unlock so much for you, and it’s a simple thing to do, right?

The thing about mindset work is that it IS simple. But most people won’t do it because of that. They brush it off and assume it must be harder, it has to be! Hard work makes success, right? Nope! Wrong!

If you’re ready to grow your business, if you’re ready to reach the levels of success you dream about — the task is simple. Start thinking and believing that you can do it. Stop punishing yourself with thoughts that don’t serve you and start stepping into your power.

You'll Never Actually Find, Have, or Make "Enough Time"

I know you’ve said it — we all have. “I don’t have enough time…” is a common reason, or dare I say excuse, for not following through on our commitments, taking the next step forward in our business, or really changing anything about our current situations.

How often have you said it? Have you said it this week? It’s an interesting phrase because… well, what does it DO to give you more time? Nothing. It’s this flat, there’s-no-options, this-is-it, type of statement. Even, “I’d like to have more time” feels a little more action-oriented, right? If pushed, I often hear follow up statements like, “I’ll just have to find more time!” or “I’ll just have to make more time!” and while those feel a lot more actionable too…

I fear it’s not the solution we really need.

👆🏻 Pin This Post To Pinterest 👆🏻

See, “time” is this high-level objection we use because, for whatever reason, we doubt anyone can tell us different. They don’t know our lives, our kids, our jobs, our pets, our commitments. If I say, “I don’t have enough time” you should just accept it, because… well, to be frank, you don’t know me.

However, I’d like to argue that “time” is scapegoat in this situation. If I said, do you have enough time to have an all expense paid trip to your favorite destination… I think you’d shuffle some sh*t around, right?

“Time” is like the easy-out. And for many people it rarely gets push back so it’s just become the default reasoning that we don’t… do anything. Change anything. Grow anything. Evolve anything. There’s just not enough time, period. But if “time” is just a scapegoat and it’s covering up a deeper reason for not doing these things… well, there’s a different (perhaps multiple different) objections or excuses or reasons that we aren’t doing these things.

And I think until we figure out those objections, “time” will continue to be our excuse to keep living the same life day after day, running the same business day after day, and getting the same results day after day. Because whatever is deeper underneath “time” is what’s holding you back. We can tell that because if you truly wanted something, you’d find the time. So there’s a reason that you don’t truly want… whatever it is that you don’t have enough time for (growing your business, launching that podcast or course, etc.).

So, perhaps it’s that you are actually quite busy and bad at prioritizing. But, then, what’s preventing you from creating a priority and focusing on one thing at a time? What are you afraid of happening if you DO pick a priority and focus on one thing at a time?

Or, perhaps it’s an alignment issue — I’ve had this happen in my own life and business. When I felt too busy to promote my coaching packages because some of my messaging felt really out of alignment. I would say, “oh I’ll make those graphics or send those emails soon, I just don’t have enough time.” In reality, I had plenty of time, I just was avoiding the realization and recognition that something bigger needed to be worked through, that I was operating out of alignment.

I’d say, in my experience, this is pretty common. You could ask yourself, “what makes me choose to feel like I don’t have enough time for this?” When I asked myself that the overwhelming answer wasn’t a list of items to do, it was a recognition that I knew the task was more daunting than just making graphics or sending emails. It was analyzing and assessing my entire business and that felt scary. With that realization also came the realization that it was necessary and that nothing was going to change or move forward with my business until I worked through those issues — and then it became a priority.

I also see “time” covering up a lack of confidence around a task. Maybe you put off launching that podcast because you’re nervous that it’ll be unsuccessful. Or you “don’t have enough time” to work on your course because you’re afraid it won’t be a sold out success.

Look, this happens for many entrepreneurs. These are valid fears, however, not taking action means you never get to grow. You’re not alone in having this struggle around confidence but that doesn’t mean you get to avoid doing anything. You could ask yourself, “what happens if I never launch this podcast” or “what’s the guaranteed result of not creating this course” to give yourself some perspective here.

Also, when you ask yourself those types of questions, be sure to really zoom out and recognize that it doesn’t just mean “well, I don’t have a podcast!” — it means you don’t make the impact you want to make, it means you don’t get to pay off your kids college tuition by the time they're 10, it means you don’t get to travel the world, speak on stages, or write a book. Whatever is really deep in your “why”.... Yeah, you don’t get to do THAT if you don’t move forward. Heavy, I know — but hopefully also motivating to get yourself into gear.

Regardless of your deep-seated reasoning, I think we can agree that “time” isn’t really the issue. And to be honest, that’s why no productivity hack will work long term. You’re solving small problems, not real issues with that approach. If you could imagine an iceberg, you’re dealing with what’s above the water… and we all know there’s a whooooole lot more underneath the surface. Digging into THAT work is where transformation happens.
